Land Yachts

We designed and made our land yachts using recycled materials.  It was great fun.  Then we raced them outside to see whose went the furthest or the fastest.  Billy's went the fastest and Tori's went the furthest.  We all won a prize for taking part, but there were special prizes for the fastest one, the one that went the furthest, the closest one to its original design and the best independently made one.

Our Tadpoles

We got some frogspawn from our pond and it hatched into tadpoles.  We have been looking after them and they grew back legs.  Now they are turning into little froglets and we are putting them back in the pond so they can grow big, and eventually lay some more frogspawn.  Here is a photo of one of our froglets - isn't he cute?

Dress-up Day in Book Week

What a lovely week we have had, doing lots of fun activities all related to our favourite books.  It has been such fun.  On the last day we had a dress up day where we all dressed up as our favourite book characters.  We all looked absolutely fabulous! Can you tell who we all are?

Our Trip To Osborne House

We went on the bus to Osborne House.  Then we went in and we went on a tour.  On the tour we saw a magic picture that moved its foot!  There were statues of Queen Victoria's children and Gods.  Queen Victoria loved her dogs and her favourite one was called Noble.  She had 9 children called Victoria, Edward, Alice, Alfred, Helena, Louise, Arthur, Leopold and Beatrice.  We saw pictures of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children.  The boys wore dressed so it was easier to change their nappies.

There was a billiards room, where the table was made higher so that Queen Victoria did not have to bend down and she quite often won.  It was a brilliant trip because it was interesting and we learned lots of information.

The Lego Man comes to visit

Year 1 was very lucky to have a visit from Mr Garside the Lego Man.  He brings with him masses of lego, 79,000 pieces!  We also had the Year 1's from Summerfields join us.  The children all worked hard with their parents to create beautiful houses that are put together to make a village.

There were so many houses that the village looked more like a town!  The end result was amazing, it was hard to believe that Year 1's had made them all.

Everyone had a lovely time, and were disappointed when it was time to stop and tidy up.

Year 1 Museum

Year 1 spent the morning looking at all the artefacts from Carisbrooke Castle Museum and tried to work out what they would have been used for.  They then got into groups and each group took a set of artefacts.  They found out lots of information about their items and searched the internet, then they made labels and captions.  They practised speaking to each other about their artefacts.  In the afternoon they displayed their artefacts and made a museum.

The parents came in and looked around the museum whilst being amazed by the knowledge of their children.

These are some of the comments made by the parents;

"well done for explaining everything so well"

"they knew so much and were very enthusiastic"

"all the children answered the questions brilliantly"

Snowy days at Barton, January 2010

We had 3 days off of school because it had snowed lots and lots.  We had lots of fun building snowmen, having snowball fights, and sledging.  When we came back to school we did lots of snow activities, like making snowy pictures, writing poems and building a class snowman.  He looked really cool.

We have lots more snowy pictures in our gallery.  Why don't you take a look?
