Welcome to Willow Class

Last term our topic was called 'Underground Overground.  In the first half term we were learning about seasons, weather, light and dark; in the second half we were learning about materials, fossils and bones.  We all enjoyed our visit to Dinosaur Isel where Trevor explained about fossils and bones found under the ground.  He showed us how much heavier a fossil is than a bone by dropping it on the floor.  It was very loud and we all felt the vibrations!

In the first term our topic was 'Off to the Shops'.  The first half term we found out about food groups, healthy eating and where our food comes from.  We really enjoyed a visit to Briddlesford Lodge Farm where we found out how milk and other farm products end up in the shops.  Other events included a visit from our friends from Otterbourne Primary School and a visit to Summerfields to watch our favourite story maker, Martin the Puppet Man.  We hoped to pick up some tips for improving our own story telling, and we did!

In Literacy we studied poetry and found patterns in poems such as repetition, rhyming, alliteration and counting.  We read and listened to many poems and then tried out some patterns in our own poems. We then went on to find out what you need to include when writing god instructions and followed some to make a toy and then delicious, healthy vegetable soup! Finally we knew enough about writing instructions to produce our own books on how to look after a pet.  We worked on story telling and writing and then how to speak and write good explanations.

In Maths we have been learning to tell the time to o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to; to count on in tens from any start number up to 100; to count in fives and twos and to find basic maths stories inside real life stories, which means we read a very short story and identify the maths.  We are getting better and better at this!

In the first half term we had a visit from our friends from Otterbourne Primary School near Winchester.  We enjoyed playing host and asking and answering questions when we met each other.  The children from Otterbourne had made some scones which were very tasty!  We had fun with an orienteering activity around the school grounds too.We enjoyed interviewing each other.

In the second half term we found out about toys past and present and explored how they work, their similarities and differences.  We really enjoyed our visit to Carisbrooke Castle Museum to help us with this. We had great fun exploring the old toys, which we were able to continue with at school with some copies of old toys. We have been investigating how we use forces to make them work.

Speaking and Listening:  We had some super Speaking and Listening sessions when the children brought in their favourite toys and spoke so clearly about them.  Many thanks to parents and carers for helping their child with this homework in thinking about what they would say.
